Sandgate Community Garden: Update 13 December 2020
The flat wheelbarrow tyre got fixed with a new inner tube and is up and running again, able to trundle yet more wood chips and compost around the garden. We still have mulching to do in various places, and by Christmas with any luck, the whole of the garden will have been covered in some sort of mulch. The squirrels have been making their own mulch from spent acorns from the small oak tree within the garden. Having eaten the acorn, they drop the debris all over the place, or carry off the acorns and dig holes to bury them in. They never find all of their buried treasure so no doubt we will be in for a few saplings coming through in the spring.
The snapped tree was very efficiently cut down by the kind Saga gardeners/groundsmen with a chainsaw, and all the debris removed. We managed to find some of the larger pieces to put around the edge of the pond giving the wildlife some extra cover and hiding places.
This week we made a start on harvesting some of the Oca, or New Zealand yam. The Oca was planted way back in April and put in spaces around some new Aronia bushes and just left to get on with it; so a great crop for filling in spare spaces. The tubers begin to swell from early October and can be harvested from mid-November – ideal for a mild area, as they suffer from hard frosts, but can be grown in pots which can be sheltered. It will be interesting to find out from the volunteers if they feel the crop is tasty enough to be grown again from spare tubers next year. It can be eaten raw or cooked like a potato.
The wild garlic patch has appeared again and ready for some harvesting. During the summer when it retreats underground, the space was overgrown with summer squashes, but now it is back and claiming the space, absolutely brilliant made into a pesto.
The Park is looking very beautiful with all the lights in some of the trees for the Christmas period and not wishing to be left out we have been having a go at making a few decorations of our own to hang on one of the gates and the oak tree. The shortest day or winter solstice is just over a week away now, and the garden is dozing,

NEW: Taking Photographs to Promote your Organisation: Kent-based photographer, Ed Thompson, will show you practical tips on image capture, thinking about style and branding and permissions – all key elements of promoting your organisation on social media, websites and in the press. A good image sells a story. Photography tips will work for those capturing images on a smart phone, so its something that can be done with minimal equipment. Ed is used to working with the voluntary sector and everyone from staff to volunteers will be encouraged to think about taking photographs to promote their organisation. Tuesday 23 February. £15. Agenda-council-meeting-15-01-20Item 7 requests SPC’s agreement to provide a letter of support for their application for heritage and other grants to develop a visitor and educations attraction around the Shorncliffe Redoubt.
The phasing of the Shorncliffe Garrison redevelopment programme creates an ideal opportunity for the Shorncliffe Trust to create a Heritage and Education Centre to bring benefit to the District through increased tourism opportunities.
Their applications will include:
• Funding applications to refurbish and make secure a suitable retained building on the Shorncliffe Garrison. (in this instance, the Gymnasium would fit the purpose as a temporary base as it sits on the boundary of the development and would not hinder the ongoing developer building programme)
• Fundraising and community and student skills projects would take place to internally fit out the building from which to commence the operation of a Heritage and Education Centre.
• The internal layout of the building would contain several different elements to increase dwell time and spend opportunities including:
o Heritage collections and Shorncliffe artefacts on display
o Interpretive Visual Displays
o An Education and Resource area
o A small Café for refreshments
o A sales area for Shorncliffe items, Books, Memorabilia and Tours etc
The last 3 items above will generate income streams to further the educational objectives of the Trust and help support the eventual purchase and restoration of one of the retained buildings which will remain in the longer term at Shorncliffe.
The Centre will also include provision of welfare facilities for visitors and Heritage Tour participants (including visitors to the Military Cemetery and those visiting annually for Canada Day commemorations).
The Trust would like us to send a letter of support to assist them in their bids for funding to various bodies as below:
“Sandgate Parish Council are proud of the heritage in our Parish, including a number of Martello Towers, the Battery Point wall and especially the scheduled monument which is the Shorncliffe Redoubt, a clear contender for the title of the birthplace of the modern British Army.
“The Redoubt sits alongside a number of other notable heritage assets, including a CWGC maintained military cemetery and still visible WW1 training trenches.
“Sandgate Parish Council regard the retention, promotion and use of these historically very significant assets as crucial. We strongly support seeing them becoming part of a visitor and educational resource / attraction to help us develop and sustain our visitor economy. We are therefore pleased to provide this letter of support to the aspirations of The Shorncliffe Trust in their endeavours to create a Heritage and Education Centre at Shorncliffe.
“We are confident that their plans to create such a Centre will provide a base for visitors to find out more about the rich military heritage our district enjoys; and for many to enjoy heritage interpretation tours of the former military training land, rich in heritage assets.”

Supporting Shepway Foodbank This Christmas
As a part of “Light Up Sandgate for Christmas”, two local pubs had kindly volunteered to be a drop-off point for Sandgate donations to the Shepway Foodbank in December. Sadly, Tier 3 restrictions have rather ended that plan – at minimum for another ten days,
However, the Foodbank, and those that need its help, is still in urgent need of donations. To make it easier to donate, we’ve put in place the following alternatives:
- There will be a Shepway Foodbank “bin” in the entrance to Sandgate Library (James Morris Court, Sandgate High Street, Sandgate, Folkestone CT20 3RR) from 9am-12pm on Tuesday and Thursdays mornings (8/12, 10/12, 15/12, 17/12, 22/12). All donations dropped to there by Tuesday 22nd December will be delivered to the foodbank in time for Christmas.
- If you have a large amount of food to collect (and we know a couple of places already have – thank you!) and can’t get it to the Library at that time, we can get it collected for you – call 01303 248563 or email clerk@sandgatepc.org.uk
This Christmas let’s help those having a hard time coping.
Shepway Foodbank supports those who are struggling to feed themselves and their families. Donations to the Foodbank will be gratefully received and passed to them by Christmas.

Sandgate Parish Council and Sandgate Library Christmas Closures 2020
The Sandgate Parish Council Office will be closed from Christmas Eve (24/12/2020) to New Years Day (01/01/2021) inclusive. The office will reopen as usual from 4th January 2021. Emails and calls left in that time will be responded to as soon as possible on or after 4th January.
Sandgate Library will be closed from 24/12/2020 – 28/12/2020 inclusive and on New Years Day (01/01/21). Click and Collect services will be available by appointment (call or email sandgate.library@kent.gov.uk or 07552 810271) on 29/12/2020 & 31/12/2020 & 2/1/2021 over the Christmas period.
From then on Sandgate Library will be open for Click and Collect every Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday am until we hear further on reopening the Library for browsing from Kent County Council, subject ot Covide restrictions.
