Beach management work which helps protect coastal properties from a storm likely to occur once in every 200 years (1:200) begins this week.
The bi-annual recycling and regrading of shingle between Fisherman’s Beach and Folkestone Harbour creates a better barrier to high tides and wave overtopping.
This was demonstrated most notably in January. No flooding or damage to residential properties or businesses was reported despite forceful winds of up to 65mph.
Approx 100,000 tonnes of beach material will be moved over an eight-week period, preparing the coastline for any 1:200 storm.
Cllr Stephen Scoffham – Cabinet Member for Climate, Environment and Biodiversity – said:
“This process has been completed twice a year since 2004 and has continuously provided excellent flood protection.”
Work to repair the breakwater damaged by Storm Goretti will get underway by the end of the year.
